“Passion leads to progress.”
What you focus on will improve … that's obvious.
But what happens when you switch your focus from aesthetically driven goals to performance driven goals?
We can all agree Olympic sprinters, weightlifters (the low and medium weight classes) and gymnasts have impressive physiques.
Do you think they focus on how they look in the mirror, or how strong, flexible and athletic they are? I can guarantee that any athletic person focuses on performance over looks.
Which is strange, because the concept of bodybuilding was born from people trying to build an athletic body. Early bodybuilders were actually more like strong men. As the sport progressed, it morphed into what we see today.
Extremely un-athletic people.
Bodybuilding has become a dysfunctional way of exercising. Every movement slowed down to maximise time-under-tension (TUT) and metabolic damage to the muscle tissue. But training slowly has few practical applications. In most cases, it's not the best way to train. (Unless you're a bodybuilder)
Most bodybuilders I know (and I know a few) have compromised function for physique.
This poses an interesting question … why are we all training like bodybuilders?
Are we really that vein and insecure?
I certainly was. Throughout my 20's I became extremely body conscious. I was a skinny kid. After boxing for 16 years I was very lean and agile. But not very muscular.
For ten years from 23 to 33 I was focussed on one thing, and one thing only. I wanted to get bigger. How big? As big as I possibly could. All at the expense of my physical performance.
The seventh and final lesson that later became key to Rad and my physical success was to shift our focus from aesthetically driven goals to performance driven goals.
This helped us overcome the fear of losing strength in the short term to unlock our true physical potential as we doubled down on flexibility.
You might be surprised to know that at my physical peak, when some would say I looked the best I've ever looked … more muscular, 92kg (202lbs) … I was more unhealthy than ever!
In today's Unity-V episode I share my backstory … as Rad and I discuss the seventh and most important of the seven key lessons that have delivered huge flexibility results.
This is a message anyone concerned about their body image … chasing unobtainable, aesthetically driven goals should hear.
Passion leads to progression and naturally my training has evolved massively over the past three years from this 18-MIN Stretch Routine to where I’m at now.
My team and I are constantly learning advanced new methods in the aforementioned four areas in Key 6. to level up our training. That’s how we continually introduce new stimulus to our bodies. We test at my gym (Unity Gym), then systemise what works best and teach it … like my latest, Mobility Warm Up.
If you’re as passionate about leveling up as I was a few years ago you’ll love my Mobility Warm Up … for more info hit me up here. If you’re ready, I’d love to welcome you into our inner circle.
