Spain: PP's Casado begins campaign by appealing to Vox voters

Popular Party (PP) leader Pablo Casado began his campaign with an appeal to voters considering backing far-right party Vox in Spain's general election on April 28.

Speaking before a 2,000-strong crowd in Madrid on Thursday, Casado urged ex-PP voters who left the party in favour of insurgents Vox to return home.

"Don't play Russian roulette. Their Popular Party is back," Casado said.

"We can only be a viable governing party if we vote together. We can only maintain national unity if we maintain unity at the ballot box," he explained to the audience.

"Together [PP, Citizens and Vox] have more votes than the block of independence supporters, communism and socialism and if we have fewer seats it's because the vote will be split," the 38-year-old warned.

Casado was chosen as PP's new leader in July 2018, after his predecessor Mariano Rajoy was removed from office in a vote of no-confidence.
