A Beacon Of Hope for Cancer Patient: Beacon Hospital's Halcyon™ Radiotherapy Welfare Fund

A Beacon Of Hope for Cancer Patient: Beacon Hospital's Halcyon™ Radiotherapy Welfare Fund Radiotherapy patients from low-income or underprivileged group can now have affordable access to advanced radiotherapy treatments. Beacon Hospital, a leading cancer specialist hospital in the country, launched the Halcyon™ Radiotherapy Welfare Fund today, to help reduce the financial burden of cancer patients. This corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative provides cancer patients access to radiotherapy at a lower cost.

Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Wahid, Medical Director and Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Beacon Hospital said that more than half of all patients with cancer will require radiotherapy as all or part of their treatment. The advancement of technology has significantly improved the delivery of radiation to become more precise. HalcyonTM which won the latest prestigious 2018 R&D 100 awards is one of the new radiotherapy technologies integrated with advanced treatment features, such as short treatment time, precise radiation delivery and pain-free.

He added that “While treatment modalities continue to improve, affordability of it remains a challenge to many. The rising cost of cancer treatment may cause some patients to skip or delay their treatment and may jeopardize their treatment outcome. With this in mind, we take every measure to keep the cost of medical care reasonable to allow more people seek the latest diagnosis and treatment. For instance, the radiotherapy treatment offered in Beacon Hospital is 20% lower than the market price and the PET-CT imaging is RM2000 only. Besides, we also initiated a few CSR Welfare funds in place namely Targeted Therapy Welfare Fund, Breast Chemotherapy Welfare Fund and Radiotherapy Welfare Fund. Thousands have benefited from these initiatives.

“In our challenge to navigate through the rising global healthcare cost, we welcome private sectors to step in to do what they can to assist the low-income or underprivileged group of patients. I commend the CSR initiative of private healthcare organisation like Beacon Hospital for reaching out to this group of patients by offering HalcyonTM Radiotherapy Welfare Fund. It is hoped that other organisations do more CSR as well for the greater good of public,” Dr. Lee Boon Chye, Deputy Health Minister commented as he was present to officiate the launch.
