Upgraded the fire pit by placing stones on the bottom after leveling it out. Also flipped some larger stones on their side and made a gap to use as a grill stand. As seen this makes cooking a little easier by having a concentrated heat/cooking source. I also no longer have to worry about balancing the grill last minute on stones or logs. While cooking the steak i am able to notice a significant difference compared to traditional, previous practiced techniques. Covering the bottom of the pit lets me feel a little better about protecting the forest floor/ root systems and seems help sustain the coal base.
Even though i didn't load up on as much firewood as would would have liked, i was able to get a small roof up to store wood under. This is by no means intended to be water proof but just a little protection from heavy rain. I spend a little to much time rambling by the new fire pit set up, but what else is there to do at night with little to no light?
Once again i woke up to a beautiful sunny day, and considered gathering an oak log to use for the bench but it wasn't as straight as i remembered from the previous trip. Maybe next time i'll grab it for firewood, and stock up on enough to last a couple of days. The bugs didn't get all that bad considering i had a small smoker fire going to keep them away but they did get pesky at times.
