Captain Jonathan Zata, spokesman for the Philippine Navy (PN), made this comment when asked about the reason why naval services obtained eight FAICMs, with four ships armed with missile line of sight (NLOS), apart from both. more modern corvettes and three versatile versatile attack aircraft, Spike-ER from surface to surface.
"FAICM is intended for a refining program of our eight Medium Patrol Killer Medium (PKM) and Rapid Attack Craft Patrols, which are used for maritime ban operations," he added in a message to the Philippines News Agency on Tuesday.
PKM is a medium-sized naval vessel whose function is a patrol boat and is generally armed with machine guns and cannons up to 25mm, 30mm and 40mm caliber.
In PN, these ships were designated as "Tomas Batilo" class patrol boats, of which there were still four active out of eight obtained from South Korea in 1995.
This PKM used to be operated by the Republic of Korea Navy and then transferred to the PN.
These ships have a top speed of 33 knots and have a range of up to 600 nautical miles.
"With FAICM, PNs will have the ability to maintain major sea communication lines (SLOCs), such as Mindoro, Balabac, Sibutu and Strait of Basilan against conventional threats. Operating in limited waters, FAICM can ban surface threats and launch NLOS missiles safely using coastal areas around it as a maneuvering room and cover, "Zata added.
Earlier, deputy leader of PN flag command Rear Admiral Robert Empedrad said President Rodrigo Duterte had given the green light for the acquisition of eight FAICMs worth PHP10 billion.
"Looking further ahead, our President recently approved the acquisition of eight craft missiles with a fast attack ban with an approved budget for a PHP10 billion contract, four of these prohibited weapons will be equipped with non-line-of-sight missiles that can hit targets "25 kilometers away with accuracy, (this) ability will easily destroy enemies in the Marawi type war," he added.
