Topic: The benefits of recycling and reusable bags. Why regulations should be passed in the United States
Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience that the government should pass regulations on reusable bags and mandatory recycling.
Thesis Statement: By supporting our nation's need to be more safe, clean and reliable we should in the case pass laws to ban plastic bag usage and implement mandatory recycling.
Introduction:
*Attention getter-If you think back about 12 years to June 25, 2007 you may remember that Hastings, NE was voted the Greenest City in the Nation! Out of the 350 cities that competed, Yahoo awarded Hastings Nebraska $250,000 for our efforts in winning the “Be a Better Planet” Greenest City in America challenge. One of the major ways Hastings committed was be Going Green and taking Yahoo’s Green Pledge. We accepted the latter and put it towards further advancing our city such as: energy-efficient street lighting, new biking trails around town and increased recycling. Being a highschool student we are encouraged every day to step out into the community and get involved. This past year I have tried to give back and through this I noticed how clean our town really is. Any resident of Hastings would attest to how proud they are to say that through the award money we’ve continued to expand our recycling opportunities and displayed the usage of our local walmarts reusable shopping bags. Today I will begin by showing you how our town and country have a big need for improving our daily recycling and reusable bags usage. I will describe my plans to make this transition and all the aspects that go into it. To end, I will foreshadow what we could expect our world to look like if these changes are made.
*Transition
Everyday we walk around our community and you probably notice countless items of trash lying around. This is a major problem all over the world.
This litter is not only in the streets but gets blown into our backyards and eventually into our major bodies of water.
Need

effects of plastic bags and bottles on the environment (World Counts, 2014)
health issues on people due to this litter (EcoWatch, 2013)
*Transition
The best way to make a change in any instance is to make a plan. Next, i am going to explain to you the abilities we have to take this problem into our own hands and how others have done so as well.
Plan of Action
Incentives to using reusable bags (Ruppenthal, 2018)
Movement to use reusable bags (Soderlin, 2018)
Full circle recycling (Postconsumers, 2019 & Parker, 2016)
*Transition
Finally, I am going to help you visualize what our world could look like if we reach these goals.
Visualization
New projects
Why to get started
Town city council about laws needed (mayors’ youth council)
Regulations set in all businesses to have recycling opportunities
(Sanderford, 2019)
Conclusion: To conclude, plastics are harmful to people, animals and the environment. There are many regulations that can be set to fix this major issue. To challenge yourself, the first step is becoming informed on the problem. To do this hop on the internet, it is vast with so many sources for you to do some more research on this topic to further your knowledge. The second step is getting connected. You should reach out to your local city council using the contact information I have listed and express your concern. And finally, visit with them. Get to know your city council members take on these issues and hopefully you can share your outlook as well so that hopefully soon we can all be making the change. If your feeling a little nervous about those solutions, then another option is to at least BYOB! Bring Your Own Bag the next time you go to the grocery store.
