Police 'running out of ideas on knife crime' thinking stop-and-search 'only solution'

Police 'running out of ideas on knife crime' thinking stop-and-search 'only solution' Labour MP Sarah Jones claimed officers can’t stop-and-search their way out of the knife crisis, on the day it was revealed attacks have soared in the past year by 8%.  The warning comes as stop-and-search in London is set to increase after pressure from the top of the Met Police.  Ms Jones said: “Our police do an incredible job keeping us safe despite years of cuts to officer numbers under this Government.     “But it’s concerning to hear senior police officers talking about stop-and-search as if it’s the only way to tackle knife crime.  “Stop-and-search is an important tool for the police, but if our entire strategy is focused on it, we won’t stop the bloodshed.”  The National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Crime, Chief Constable Andy Cooke, insisted officers were doing all they could but were hamstrung by a lack of funds.  He explained: “Our aim is to build a stronger policing system that’s properly funded so we can reduce crime and build confidence.”
