Britain will be hotter than Hawaii tomorrow before a sweltering 34C sees the hottest August 26 for 178 years. After a mostly wet August, a 1,500-mile African heat burst is treating Brits to a Bank Holiday bake. A million visitors are due in Cornwall over the weekend, with 250,000 expected in Brighton on Saturday and Sunday, 150,000 in Blackpool, 125,000 in Bournemouth and 125,000 in Great Yarmouth. Record traffic jams are expected as sun-lovers clog coastal routes including the A23 to Brighton, A31 to Dorset, A30 to Cornwall and M55 to Blackpool. Traffic analysts Inrix said: “There could be record delays.” Music revellers will swelter Notting Hill Carnival on Sunday, while Reading and Leeds Festivals scorch. Supermarkets saw a BBQ rush. Tesco's long weekend sales are expected to total 1.5million sausages, a million burgers, six million ice cream tubs and lollies, five million cans and bottles of beer and six million bottles of wine, sales trends showed. The Met Office forecast the hottest August Bank Holiday weekend since the holiday began 54 years ago in 1965, with Saturday’s highs around 31C followed by Sunday tipping 32C and bank Holiday Monday forecast 33C, with a chance of 34C. Even the North will see temperatures climb to 31C. Britain is hotter than 30C Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mexico City. The Bank Holiday Monday record is 28.2C, on August 28, 2017, at Holbeach, Lincs. The record over the whole holiday weekend is 31.5C, on August 25, 2001, at Heathrow, Met Office records show. Monday will also be the hottest August 26 since records began 178 years ago in 1841 if highs beat the 32.8C in 1964 at Cromer, Norfolk, date temperature records used for Met Office records show. Forecasters said a 1,500-mile “burst of heat” is blowing to Britain from Africa and the Mediterranean. The Met Office forecast 33C - with a chance of 34C - on Tuesday, 30C on Wednesday, then a cool-down with 23C from Thursday. The sizzle comes a month after the 38.7C hottest day ever recorded, on July 25. Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: “Day-on-day heating means 32C is forecast on Sunday, with 33C on Monday and Tuesday, and a 20 per cent chance of 34C. “There's certainly a good chance of breaking the 31.5C Bank Holiday weekend record. “The holiday weekend's sunny weather is making up for a disappointing August with wet and sometimes and windy conditions. “Heat is coming from southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Wednesday could see 30C, but it's back down to 23C on Thursday.” The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It's a Great British Bake Off for the Bank Holiday weekend. “August is going from awful to awesome as a 'Super Sunday' sees 32C, and up to 34C is possible on Monday.
