FINA, the world governing body for aquatic disciplines uses the Day to recognize and celebrate aquatic
sports around the world
As part of the celebration, the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation hosted a series of water based activities
at Pigeon Point including kayak racing, swimming and lifesaving classes.
The observance celebrates the aquatic sports around the world on a common day.
This year was the first time the Day was celebrated in St. Lucia on a
large scale.
Sunday’s activities featured open water swimming, kayak races
relays and sunfish races.
Lifesaving demonstrations for children also formed part of activities.
They were designed to encourage the young participants to respect
the water and about water safety generally.
Miss Paula –Vice President of the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation
highlighted the importance of learning to swim and about water
safety. Considering we live on an island she says, anyone who can't
swim is ultimately in danger.
The ultimate goal is to encourage people to participate in physical
activity in water, whether in pools, rivers, or the open sea.
The Aquatics Federation will now turn its focus toward preparing
for the second annual Inter Commercial House Swimming
Championship and is calling on all commercial houses to prepare
their teams to participate in the event.
