Toxic Family and Estrangement in Educated by Tara Westover

Toxic Family and Estrangement in Educated by Tara Westover Toxic Family and estrangement in Educated the Memoir and Literary
Debut by Tara Westover, who at 16 knew nothing of home work, textbooks, let alone the information most of us take for granted.. She'd never heard of the holocaust or the Civil rights Movement. She thought Rosa Parks got in trouble for actually taking a bus seat (as in stole it and took it home). When her abusive brother Shawn called her a whore and shamed their mother by saying Tara was a slut who was probably already pregnant Tara couldn't defend herself even though she had never gone further than to have a crush because even though she had six older siblings, a farm full of animals, and a midwife for a mother had no idea how babies were made. She feared a crush was all it took. Tara sets out on a journey of self discovery that is at once magical and horrifying because it separates her from the people she loved, everything she'd ever known, the very person she'd believed herself to be. Trying to find common ground to stand on she realized that her father's beliefs caved in under the slightest scrutiny. The family saw it too and their solution was to get rid of the one asking questions. The gaslighting and smear campaign ensued and it was not long before the family was divided down the middle. Despite the unusual circumstances of this family, Tara's message will resonate with anyone who grew up with narcissistic parents and eventually came to the realization that they could not have grown up with less protection, care, or nurturing if she'd had no parents at all.
o they had to the truth of her family unfolded the moment she asked for help. Her family quickly sacrificed her in favor of their false narrative, and this is why it resonated with me.
I am very happy to have an example of how to write family conflict and estrangement in a world that is poised not to believe any parents would sacrifice their kids for a story, so when Tara's family does exactly that she writes it down and lets us make of it what we will. Most of us who are estranged from our own families know that pain all too well.
Because she dared to have needs, and because she knew no one close to her wanted to take care of her needs they had to get rid of her. Because Tara refused to betray herself, deny her own memories in order to hold onto her family and her past, but ultimately its not really a choice at all. There was no going back.
