Week 21-- Law Gospel Distinction-- Andrew Wegner

Week 21-- Law Gospel Distinction-- Andrew Wegner Join us for our Every Track Every Week Bible Studies, at tracks all across Texas from the first of March through the end of October!

This week’s discussion is from episode #40 of our podcast, The Gospel Driven Athlete, titled “Law Gospel Distinction.” If the gospel of Jesus Christ is in fact “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16) and if the gospel is in fact the primary point of differentiation between Christianity and all other world religions, then it stands to reason that, as the Apostle Paul said, the gospel is of “foremost importance" (1Cor 15:3)! As Christians who are defined by how God has redeemed us in Christ (the gospel message), we should pay close attention to the times that the gospel is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, lived out by Jesus in the New Testament, and then proclaimed by Christ and His followers afterwards. Additionally, if the proclamation of this gospel message is what God uses to bring new life to dead sinners and to motivate the saints towards love and good deeds, we should be careful to not confuse this gospel message, either with sources from outside of the Bible or with portions of Holy Scripture that are in fact not the gospel.

Roughly 500 years ago, Theodore Beza (a well-respected, old, dead churchman) is credited with having said, “Ignorance of the distinction between the Law and Gospel is one of the principle sources of all the abuses which corrupt and still corrupt Christianity.” If this is in fact true, how do we define the law and the gospel biblically, how do we distinguish between them, and how does this impact us in this modern day and age? We will look to these questions and more this week! We hope this week’s study leads you to find great hope and rest in Christ’s perfect fulfillment of the law for you, and in His offering of His earned righteousness for you as proclaimed in the gospel!
