Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill - Harare Public Hearing Meeting Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill - Harare Public Hearing meeting. The Zimbabwe Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Chairman Hon Prince Dubeko Sibanda chaired the public hearing meeting on the Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill in Harare on Monday 19 August 2019. The Committee is currently hearing the views of the public on the Freedom of Information Bill in all the ten provinces. Hon Prince Dubeko Sibanda appealed to the state media to advertise such information on the venues for these hearings to enable the people to attend.
When passed into law the Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill is meant to give effect to the access to information provisions enshrined in section 61 & 62 of the 2013 Zimbabwe Constitution. On 5 July 2019, the Government gazzetted the Freedom of Information Bill (House Bill 6 of 2019). This is part of Government efforts to repeal the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (2001) (AIPPA).
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) upon its gazzette the Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill criticized it for failing to capture the views of Civic Society Organisations. Therefore this Public hearing of the Zimbabwe Freedom of Information Bill would bring to an end this critics as Civic Organizations would be given a chance to participate. Thus Hon Prince Dubeko Sibanda promise that the public hearings outcome would be brought to the Parliament of Zimbabwe uncensored.
As mentioned by Hon Prince Sibanda it is also vital for the State Media to advertise or publicize these Public hearing meetings for free to enable all people to participate.
