Intro to Online Safety for Parents

If you’re like me , you may be uneasy about exactly what your kids are doing online. You hope for the best but you don’t really know.

You hear stories of online abuse or worse and hope it won’t happen to your kids.

Your kids are good kids...and yet , there’s something disturbing about them disappearing into the digital world for hours on end…. You wonder what they're doing and don’t really know.

Are they safe?

You really don’t want to crack down on them excessively and you really don't want to have endless arguments about their screens.

You want to be a good parent.

But how? What does that mean when you can't even see what your kids are doing online?

I had all the same concerns for my kids.

Like you , I really didn’t have anywhere to turn. There was no one place I could go to learn how to keep my kids safe online.

So , I developed my own online family safety system that I call The Five Circles of Online Safety.

It’s a unique combination of questions, conversations , technical knowledge and tools that have made a world of difference to our family. It took a lot of trial and error and yes, some pain to get it right.

When I see so many parents just "hoping for the best" like I used to, as a mother of 3 teens and tweens , I feel the obligation to share what has empowered our family.

What I present here is the foundation for all the work I do with schools and families.
