I'm making two classic rye cocktail perfect to warm your bones this fall and pairing them up with two iconic watches **********************************
This week on HTD I'm partnered again with my good friends at Crown & Caliber, the best place to buy or sell a watch, and I'm bringing two outstanding classic cocktails for fall and pairing them up with two amazing watches. A Stone Fence with a Tudor Pelagos and a Rolex Day Date 40 with a Millionaire Cocktail.
The Stone Fence is a highball that goes all the back to the days of the American Revolution, it was famously enjoyed in great quantity by Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys the night before they bloodlessly stormed Fort Ticonderoga to liberate the artillery there. It's a very simple, rustic combination of spirit and apple cider. The cider of course should be the hard kind, none of that brown apple juice please. With the spirit you've got options, in Ethan Allen's time rum would probably have been the way to go, with Apple Jack being perfectly acceptable. Whiskey would have been an option for sure as well. Here I opt to go with Rye, I think the rye spice stands up well in the relatively sweet Apple Cider and provides an excellent contrast in flavor, yielding a lovely drink. The Tudor Pelagos is Tudor's first dive watch not based on the work done at Rolex (their parent company) and it's a high tech rough and tumble marvel. It's a titanium case with a ceramic bezel disc, helium escape valve, self adjusting dive bracelet, and a depth rating of 500 meters. That's very deep. This is a watch built to take whatever you can throw at it.
Stone Fence
2 oz. -or- 60 ml. Rye
6 oz. -or- 180 ml. Hard Cider
Next up I'm pairing a Rolex Day Date 40, sporting meteorite dial and diamond indices with a Millionaire Cocktail. The Millionaire is a real prohibition era drink, harkening back to that bygone era of top hats and touring cars and speakeasies, and although the Day Date wasn't around back then, its tasteful opulence certainly looks the part. The Day Date is also called The President amongst watch fans because of its being favored by so many U.S. Presidents. Additionally the unique bracelet it comes with is referred to by Rolex as a President. When I first put this on I assumed the "Meteorite" dial was just the in-house name for the pattern work on the face of the watch, NOPE! It's actually a thin wafer sliced off a real meteorite that landed in Namibia. Total insanity.
Millionaire Cocktail
One Egg White
.25 oz. -or- 8 ml. Lemon Juice
.25 oz. -or- 8 ml. Grenadine
Two Dashes of Absinthe
.75 oz. -or- 22 ml. Orange Curaçao
2 oz. -or- 60 ml. Rye
Dry Shake & Shake Again
Garnish with bitters
