Three-month-old twin panda cubs were given their official names at the Pairi Daiza park in Brugelette on Thursday.
Chinese and Belgian delegations attended the special naming ceremony, celebrated according to the Chinese tradition, on the 100th day of the twins' birth.
"So the names are Bao Di and Bao Mei. Bao Di is the name for the baby boy and it means little brother of Tian Bao. Bao Mei means little sister of Tian Bao," announced the master of ceremonies. Their names were chosen via an online poll in which the public could choose from a number of options.
The twins were born in the zoo on August 8 from panda couple Xing Hui (father) and Hao Hao (mother). The newborns are scheduled to join their big brother Tian Bao by December 14.
The Belgian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Marie Christine Marghem compared the conditions set up at the zoo to "a piece of Chinese territory here in Wallonia," and praised the cooperation between both countries to preserve endangered species such as pandas.
"We are fighting together to save endangered species, to try to make it possible to let them live and reproduce so then we are able to reintroduce them into nature, so our relations are excellent," she said.
The Ambassador of China in Belgium Cao Zhongming shared his emotions as he participated in the naming ceremony and read to the public President XI Jinping's message of congratulations to His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium.
