RIVER EROSION, TRANSPORTATION & DEPOSITION - Fluvial Processes - AQA GCSE 9-1 Geography 2019

RIVER EROSION, TRANSPORTATION & DEPOSITION - Fluvial Processes - AQA GCSE 9-1 Geography 2019 Here is a quick recap of the Fluvial processes.

We’ve got Erosion, Transportation and Deposition.

There are 4 types of erosion:

Hydraulic action, which is when the force of water hitting the river banks or river bed causes erosion

Abrasion is when the load, which can include stones and pebbles, continuously hit the banks or bed as it is carried downstream

Attrition sees the stones that are being transported hitting each other and therefore wearing down over time to form smaller and more rounded pebbles

Solution is when rocks like limestone are dissolved as the water flows over it

Transportation sees the load move down the river and this happens through 4 different processes:

Traction is when large particles roll down the river bed

Saltation is then slightly smaller rocks bounce down the river bed

Suspension is when small sediment is held up and carried within the rivers flow

Solution sees the dissolved load move down the river

Deposition sees the load be dropped when the velocity of the river slows and can not carry the sediment any further. This could be at a base of waterfall or the inside of the bend of a meander.
