Why has Russia been banned from all major sporting tournaments?

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced a four-year ban on Russia from all major global sporting events. While Russia has 21 days to appeal against it, if the ban stands, it will not be able to compete in either the 2020 Tokyo Olympics or the 2022 Doha Football World Cup.
