An Overview of Asthma and Status Asthmaticus

An Overview of Asthma and Status Asthmaticus Asthma is a paroxysmal, possibly allergic inflammation of the airways, which is accompanied by wheezing, cough, breathlessness, and chest tightness, mostly at night or in the morning.
Dr. Mobeen Syed categorizes asthma as an obstructive disease.
In obstructive diseases, the inhalation is normal. Patients usually have a problem with exhaling that causes discomfort.
On the other hand, in restrictive lung diseases, the lungs themselves have a problem, for example, scarring or fibrosis. Restrictive lung disease refers to a group of lung diseases that prevent the lungs from fully expanding with air. The patient can not inhale properly.
In this video, Dr. Mobeen Syed differentiates asthma from status asthmaticus.
Asthma is usually paroxysmal (intermittent). It happens and goes away.
It is possibly allergic, which means that it occurs due to immune system abnormality.
On the other hand, status asthmaticus is an acute exacerbation of asthma that remains unresponsive to initial treatment with bronchodilators.
