Dilip Kumar and Rakhee Gulzar were 'B.R.Chopra''s first choices for the role of Raj and Pooja Malhotra at the time the film was conceptualized. Unfortunately the film had to be shelved for thirty years. At a retrospective of Chopra's films, Kumar said he regretted not being able to do the film. After that Amitabh Bachchan was approached for the role.
