Hi, my name is Tabitha and I have a rare skin disease. Instead of letting the doctors deal with it, I instead peeled all my skin off.

Let me tell you how this came to happen.

Ever since I was a little baby, I had issues with my skin. My mom would notice I’d get these terrible rashes and she had to put socks in my hands as a toddler to keep me from scratching myself.

You can imagine how many times they took me to the hospital. I saw so many doctors! I don’t remember many of these visits since many happened before I was 5 or 6.

So many different specialists reviewed my case and they had my parents run all kinds of tests on me. At first, they thought it was some kind of allergic reaction. Then they figured out it must have been a genetic issue. Then they suspected an environmental problem.

My parents actually moved out of our first house, concerned that something in there might be harming me. But the rashes kept on happening over and over again. My whole body would get red and covered in nasty blisters. It annoyed me to bits and I couldn’t seem to stop trying to scratch myself. This only made the situation worse.

My mom bought all kinds of remedies for me to take. I also had to try creams and moisturizers. At one point, my folks even gave holistic medicine a chance. A kind but strange woman performed reiki on me and other new-age healing techniques. They didn’t work.

You can imagine how desperate my parents were getting. They wanted me to be healthy and be able to have a normal life. SoI kept being sent by from school though I missed so many classes over time.

I couldn’t go out and play with other kids and was forbidden from running around or jumping. My mom was worried I’d scrape my skin and make it all worse. I felt like I was living in a small, isolated bubble, and I was so sad all the time.

Even though keeping up with a normal life was hard for me with my condition, I absolutely refused to be homeschooled. My parents were hesitant to listen to my protests, but they didn’t want to isolate me any further. So in the end, they always agreed to let me keep trying.

You bet I knew the school nurse more than I knew all my teachers! She had gotten so used to seeing me that she was surprised if I wasn’t sent to her office on a daily basis.

As you can imagine, I had few friends. Other students would look at me with either concern or disgust. They all thought that my condition was contagious, even if it wasn’t. Even if I explained it over and over again, they didn’t seem to believe me.
