UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is set to update Members of Parliament on the current situation in Iran in London on Tuesday, January 7, after a US airstrike targeted and killed Iran's Quds Force General Soleimani. This will be the PM’s first appearance at the Parliament since the Christmas recess. Topical questions and a debate on the Withdrawal Agreement are also expected to take place during the parliamentary session today. According to Johnson’s spokesperson, the Prime Minister has spoken to his Iraqi counterpart Adel Abdul-Mahdi to discuss the need to "de-escalate tensions" in the Middle East. A meeting of the UK’s National Security Council is expected to take place on Tuesday. Soleimani and the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and other militia leaders were killed in the US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport last week. The Pentagon released a statement confirming that the US had carried out the airstrike at the order of US President Donald Trump, calling it a "decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad." Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack.
