The Rotary Club of Barbados chose a novel way to raise awareness and funds for Diabetes as well as the Blood Donor Center during the first quarter. Our aim was to: 1. Raise awareness for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes,
2. Raise awareness and drive blood donations.
3. Raise an amount of not less than $30,000 to assist the organizations which support the cause.
In order to achieve our goals, we hosted a corporate fundraising dinner supported by over 15 companies from corporate Barbados, Rotarians and Partners-in-Service celebrating the work completed by the staff at our Rotary Club Workmanship Awards Gala 2019 IG
National Blood Collection Centre, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation, and the Diabetes Association of Barbados. We continue to raise awareness Blood Donations by hosting corporate blood drives at our sponsored corporate offices. Diabetes testing was carried out at our RotaGames annual event in June 2019 and will again be a feature of our event scheduled for June 14, 2020. Our health and wellness awareness initiatives will continue in 2020. Additionally, we participated in the World Diabetes Day event.
From the funds raised we were able to donate $7,500 each to the Diabetes Foundation and the Barbados Diabetes Association and we were honoured to have District Governor Trevor Blake present the final cheque of $32,000 to the staff at the National Blood Collection Centre during his visit in December 2019. The funds will be sued to purchase new equipment for the Blood Bank.
