A drowning swimmer was rescued from Istanbul's major Halic (also known as Golden Horn) waterway on Monday, as Orthodox Christians participating in the traditional Epiphany ceremony swam across it to retrieve a crucifix thrown into the icy waters by Fener-Greek Patriarch Bartholomew.
Dozens of worshippers can be seen swimming across the strait towards the crucifix and kissing it, before the drowning person is noticed. The Man was saved by police who dove in and brought the man to show. First aid procedures were then performed on him, before being rushed to hospital by ambulance.
The man is reportedly now in good condition.
