Diana made it clear to the boys that there were ‘work days’ and ‘play days’. On work days they had to dress smartly and be on their best behaviour but play days could be relaxing and involve special treats. The Princess of Wales would even allow her sons to enjoy a McDonald’s burger on days they were not working. In the documentary ‘Prince William at Thirty’, uploaded to YouTube in June 212, former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe revealed how the royals used to visit the fast food chain. He said: “I have to say that the prince would probably have had a fit to think his sons were eating McDonald’s.” Meanwhile, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond explained the reasoning behind it. She said: “[Diana] very consciously said: ‘There will be work days and there will be play days.   “'And on work days you have to dress up like young princes and you have to behave that way. “'But on your play days, yes you can wear your jeans, you can have baseball caps, you can eat a burger.’” The three of them also enjoyed fun days out, for example at theme parks. According to Mr Wharfe, the boys were eager to see their security staff get drenched on one of the water rides in Thorpe Park.  He said: “I remember coming back to Kensington Palace seriously drenched thanks to William and Harry.” Meanwhile the former Thorpe Park general manager Colin Dawson OBE recalled a moment he, Diana and the boys were “roaring with laughter” because of the huge splash the five security staff made.  expert Katie Nicholl added that, during this day out, the family did not use their royal status to skip any queues. She said: “There was no queue jumping and using their VIP status, the queued just like everyone else.”  This was likely part of Diana’s aim to keep the boys lives “as normal as possible”. She was determined to give the boys normal family experiences, despite the unavoidable royal duties and press interest. Years later aged 18, William said: “I don’t like special treatment at all,” likely influenced by how his mother brought him up. This quality time with their mum William and Harry surely treasured in the years to come during the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage and especially after their mother’s tragic death.
