Kyoto Machiya Hotel - What to Expect if you Stay

Kyoto Machiya Hotel - What to Expect if you Stay Kyoto Machiya aka Kyo-Machiya are traditional Japanese wooden townhouses and if you are visiting Kyoto, you may want to considering staying in a Kyo-Machiya. This Japan Guide explores what it is like to stay in an authentic Kyo Machiya and what you can expect in these type of Kyoto hotels. Machiyas are built using a interlocking wooden parts and were popular with Kyoto Merchants before WWII. Since Kyoto was saved from air raids during the war, many of the Machiyas in are still around to this day, but once torn down these Machiyas will likely never be rebuilt. Walking inside, you truly feel like you’re a part of history.

Machiya Hotels are setup similar to what you would expect from a Kyoto Airbnb Room in that the house is separate and all to yourself. You can organize to have house cleaning depending on the owner and in my case there was a washing machine and dryer facilities. This particular complex has 4 machiyas all together perfect for groups and families.

So There are 6 different types of Kyo-Machiya, but this one is a SoNikai, which means it has a high 2nd floor ceiling especially when compared to the tsushi-nikai kyo-machiya with low ceilings.

A garden in the back is another characteristic of a Machiya. Since many machiyas back in the day were side by side with neighbors, having this garden was an important part of the design. The garden allows for more sunlight and air circulation into the house, but it also creates a seamless blend between nature and living space.
