Unemployment is a very critical issue in Uttarakhand State. On the same hand, Migration rate is
also increasing very rapidly every year. At the time of the establishment of Uttarakhand State, Govt.
has made & announced many policies to recover the problem of Uttarakhand but still, hundreds
of villages in the state have seen a rapid trend of migration especially by youth. A lot of factors are
responsible for these problems viz illiteracy, lack of employment opportunities, geography,
lack of better medical and education facilities, etc.
In these rugged conditions Kirti Kumari (Food Scientist & Social Nutrition Activist) working in
KVK, Ranichauri, Tehri Garhwal made her efforts in creating self-employment among women
and rural youths through food processing. She stepped in this Land of Gods Devbhoomi
(Uttarakhand) in Oct 2013. She has done M.Tech in Processing and Food Engg from MPUAT,
Udaipur. At the age of 22 years, she has been selected in KVK, Tehri Garhwal and got the
opportunity to serve Uttarakhand.
She continued to work from the last six years and converted many rural women and youths
into an entrepreneur. She has trained more than 1000 rural women to become Food Entrepreneurs.
She is working on the processing and utilization of Temperate fruits, Millets, and Vegetables. She
worked hard on the transfer of proven technologies and also made efforts to develop new
technologies in the field of Food Technology & Nutrition Science. She formed various SHG’s in
villages and provided them training for preparing Jam, Pickles, Chutney, Squash, Syrups, etc.
Her featured and Innovative developed products are-
1. Ragi Sweet (commonly known as Kodarfi, The Hill Ratna Awarded Product)
2. Millet Mathri
3. Millet Nachos
4. RUTF Iron Laddu for Anaemic
5. RUTF Baby Food (commonly known as URJA)
Her products are Natural and Chemical free products. They are free from Maida, artificial
colorings and flavorings. Her target is how Food Technology can Challenge Malnutrition. She
also helped a lot to stand the most popular brands of Uttarakhand i.e. Organic Garhwal-
the segment of grocery products and Devkaush Organization- popular for sweets
and snacks of Millets. She has nicely collaborated with various department
viz. IFAD- ILSP, ICDS, etc. She is also actively involved in creating awareness
program e.g. National Nutrition Week, World Breastfeeding week, child
and maternal care, health, and hygiene practices.
Future Plans-
She is now focusing to bring mechanization so that the crops of hills can be
efficiently used and drudgery among women will be reduced. Mechanization
will bring quality products from hills and also will increase production.
She has created so many success stories of Livelihood and enhancing the nutritional status of rural
people and children. For her initiatives, she has got many National and International Awards. A
big salute to such hard-working Govt. officer who has made her efforts to bring the change.
I Ashish Chamoli compiled her work in a short documentary. Though she has made uncountable
contributions I am presenting best of her work.
