How To Train Your Dog #10 | Loose Leash Walk | Bakers Acres K9 Academy The Walk.

Probably the most important ingredient in establishing a healthy relationship with your dog.

This is when and where and how you establish trust, respect, and leadership.

No harsh tactics or unnecessary fluff needed. Just grab the leashes and start walking.

Step 1: give the dog about 2'-3' of leash (depends on height of the dog). Nice and loose. No wrapping around your hands or wrists.

Step 2: stand up straight. You know where you're going so help the dog by acting like it.

Step 3: stop using the leash like a joystick to control your dog's movements. It's a communication tool, not a restraint. Just there so the dog has a vague idea of where you are going. Stick your thumbs in your pockets if necessary.

Step 4: do a few 180° turns and abrupt stops to gain your dog's focus. Give eye contact and praise when your dog looks at you for directions.

Step 5: end your walk with praise and a long rest in the shade using an obedience command like "down" or "place".

Many thanks to my clients Brooke & Jason, their dog Sadie, plus #ChicoBaker #BanditBaker #OllietheLab and #RubythePibble.
