Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee spoke to India Today TV News Director Rahul Kanwal in an exclusive interview on the show 'Jab We Met'. Walking at the campus of his alma mater Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, Abhijit Banerjee answered questions on a range of issues such as the economic slowdown, corporate taxes, fiscal deficit and inflation.

Q. What do you think of the current economic slowdown? Why do you think the growth India is down to 5%? And what according to you could be a potential roadmap for India?
A. Mentioning that he is not a macro-economist, Abhijit Banerjee said, "It looks very much like we are in a Keynesian downspin. Meaning, there's not enough demand. People aren't buying food. So, if I had to pick one thing the government should do is put cash in the hands of the poor. Through higher support prices for crops, through NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme)..."
