Justin Hemmes secures catering contract for race that stops the nation He's the billionaire pub baron who owns 89 hospitality venues.And now Justin Hemmes has secured a catering contract for this year's Melbourne Cup on November 5.The 46-year-old, who launched catering company Made By Merivale three years ago, told The Sunday Telegraph that 'it's a big deal' for the business to branch out. Justin was asked by his Merivale clients Furphy and Champagne Mumm to cater The Birdcage at this year's Melbourne Cup, alongside The Big Group and Peter Rowland.The Big Group have catered The Melbourne Cup for 21 years, and Peter, for 25 years.  'We started Made By Merivale about three years ago and we just approached it softly-softly, so all our work has been based around requests,' Justin told Sunday Confidential. 'We were fortunate enough that we had some requests from our clients who have marquees there, so we had to go through the process to get accepted.'  In March, Justin entered Australia's billionaire's club for the first time thanks to his thriving property empire.His fortune jumped to a spectacular $1.05billion thanks to his 89 venues, including popular Sydney venues The Ivy, Coogee Pavilion and The Newport Arms.Speaking to the Australian Financial Review in May, Justin said he is 'in the business of making people feel good'.'Everyone has tough lives, unfortunately, and you need escapism, you need a lift. Hospitality and socialising is the No. 1 escape,' he said.'People are coming to us to have a good time – we aren't delivering bad news and we aren't trying to solve problems for them.'They are coming to us for a great time and all we have to do is help them. It's the best job in the world.'
