British citizens are among those missing or injured following an eruption on a volcanic island.

Five people have died, eight people are missing and 31 remain in hospital following the eruption on White Island, 30 miles off the east coast of the country's North Island.

It is thought there were about 50 people on the island when the volcano erupted on at 2.11pm local time on Monday spewing an enormous plume of ash into the air.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said reconnaissance flights over the island looking for survivors have found "no signs of life".
